Someone told me at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic that I should come up with an origami face mask. Although I didn’t come up with a folding design on my own, I found several DIY origami face masks on the internet. Most of them were not practical because they needed a specific pattern or hard to find materials. After a bit of searching, I found a perfect face cover! It was easy to fold without having to use a pattern.
A Brilliant Design
A professor from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow designed a brilliant disposable origami face mask. Since face masks and materials are in short supply, this is a great alternative that can be made quickly with few materials. Her video tutorial was easy to follow. Instead of using a paper towel, I decided to try folding it from a sheet of rice paper from the stash in my studio. Not only was it the perfect weight and thickness for breath-ability, but it is also the ideal size to fit an adult face.
The long fibers in rice paper make it strong to hold up to a variety of creative processes, such as Sumi-e and encaustic painting. And I discovered it folds nicely. I painted a couple of sheets with Sumi ink just to see how they would look after folding.
The original design called for one sheet of paper measuring twelve by eighteen inches, two rubber bands, and a stapler. I didn’t use a staple to hold my mask together. Instead, I put a drop of glue in the areas where the staple would have been. I don’t want to risk scratching my chin with a sharp staple!
